Surcharges, Convenience Fees… and Why We Don’t Use Them

You’ve probably seen them before: surcharges, convenience fees, service charges. They show up on bills and receipts everywhere these days. While they may go by different names, they all boil down to the same thing—extra charges added after the fact.

A surcharge is usually a percentage added to your bill, most often when you pay with a credit card. It’s meant to cover the processing fees charged by card companies.

A convenience fee is typically a flat amount charged for using a certain payment option or service—like paying online instead of in person.

Here’s the thing…

Let’s Be Honest

We’re moving fast toward a cashless world . Most of us pay for almost everything with a debit or credit card. Groceries, gas, coffee, trash service—you name it.

Do you really think businesses haven’t already built card processing costs into their prices? Of course they have.

Processing fees usually run around 3%. From a business standpoint, we’d rather take a $100 payment and pay a few dollars in processing fees than not make the sale at all. Those costs are part of doing business—and yes, they’ve already been factored in. On top of that, many customers are paying far more in credit card interest than the processing fee itself.

And About “Service Charges”…

Once they show up, they almost never go away. Fuel surcharges are a great example. Fuel goes up, the charge increases. Fuel comes down… but the charge stays.

That just doesn’t sit right with us.

We don’t charge convenience fees.
And we don’t tack on service charges.

If our costs go up, we’re upfront about it. We adjust our prices instead of sneaking in extra fees. No fine print. No surprises.

Disposal of Prescription Drugs

The curious minds at AC Trash Hauling were discussing how to legally dispose of prescription drugs. Why were we concerned with this topic, you may be asking.

We were recently hired to clean out a home. Everything must go.

We will not haul away hazardous waste items, HazMat. This includes gas and oil, chemicals, cleaning supplies, paint and solvents, and the typical items that your local trash service would not take. We urge our customer to take them to a local recycling agency.

Notice that the list of exclusions lacked prescription medications. Alas we often time come across of varying amounts of prescription drugs. This is where curious minds started to act up.

We did some research, not necessarily all inclusive.

We did find a publication from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, EPA 816-F-11-003. This document is entitled, “How to Dispose of Medicines Properly”.

A quick paraphrase follows.

1st choice :

Contact your city or county to see if they have a take-back program. Or contact your local pharmacy for the same purpose.

2nd Choice

This comes from Drug Disposal Guidelines, Office of National Drug Control Policy

Simply, remove your drugs from the original container, mix with some undesirable item, kitty litter and coffee grounds were suggested. Put the mixture in a sealed container; a small plastic tub or sealable plastic bag. Dispose of the mixture with your trash.

What is difference between a surcharge and convenience fee ?

A surcharge and a convenience fee are both additional charges applied to a transaction, but they are typically used in different contexts and for different purposes.

Surcharge:
A surcharge is an extra fee that is added to the total cost of a transaction as a percentage of the transaction amount. It is often used in the context of credit card payments. Merchants may impose a surcharge to cover the cost of processing credit card transactions, which can be significant due to the fees charged by credit card companies. However, the legality and regulations around surcharges vary by region and jurisdiction. Some places allow surcharges, while others have restrictions or outright bans on them.
Convenience Fee:

A convenience fee is a charge imposed for the convenience of a particular payment method or service. This fee is generally fixed and is not based on a percentage of the transaction amount. Convenience fees are often applied when customers choose to use a specific payment method or service that is considered more convenient or offers additional benefits. For example, if you're purchasing tickets online and opt for a "print-at-home" option rather than picking up physical tickets, you might be charged a convenience fee for the convenience of printing your own tickets.

In summary, the main differences between a surcharge and a convenience fee are:

AC Trash Hauling does not believe in either of these to items. Let's face the reality of our current economy. We are rapidly approaching a "CASHLESS" economy. Collectively we tend to pay for items with a debit or credit card. It doesn't matter what you buy.

Be honest with yourself, don't you think that the vendor has included a cost for the "fees" that they pay for the ability to accept credit/debit cards? Of course they do.

Processing fees are a variable, but hover close to 3%. As a vendor, I would rather receive $100 and pay $3 processing fee, as opposed to not making the sale. Trust me those few dollars get incorporated into the overall cost. Sadly, the customer is more than paying the processing fee with their interest on the credit card.

When it comes to "Service Charges", they seem to get added and never removed. Think about fuel service charges. The cost for service increases, as does the "Service Charge". The $5 fuel charge becomes $8, and then $10, etc.

AC Trash Hauling does not and will not add a "Service Charge". We would rather be upfront and increase our prices.

Is Hiring The Neighbor Boy A Good Solution?

So you want to hire the boy down the street

You’ve made your phone calls to several companies. With nothing concrete to base your comments on, you think the cost for Junk Removal is too high. Heck, the high school boy down the road has a pick up and is always looking for a few dollars. You think you’ll hire him.

That may not be your best decision. Here are a few reasons why.

Is he insured?

Not important you think. Well what happens when he leaves a big gouge in your hardwood floor? Who do you call when they put a big hole in your wall? Who is paying for that? Companies that specialize in this service carry general liability insurance to protect you.

When will he get it done?

Schedules are busy. The boy down the street has other priorities. His friends are too busy to help him. Ok, you thought you would save a few bucks but now you have been placed on the back burner. Once again the professionals keep tight schedules, their business depends upon it.

Where will the stuff get dumped?

The boy down the street knows someone who knows someone that has a dumpster. You have no clue if your unwanted items are being legally disposed of. I know of several people that suffered the consequences of illegal dumping.

Allow me to share a story.

I was delivering some usable furniture to a women’s shelter. While off-loading two young men approached me to haul away a couple of mattresses they had on their truck. Apparently they were hired to haul them away. After they learned what the cost of disposal was at the “dump” they tried to “Donate” them to the shelter. The shelter does not accept mattresses for health reasons. It’s a good thing because these mattresses were not worthy of a donation. Two days later I rode by and found them leaning up against the dumpster at the shelter. Obviously the result of a late night dump and run. Unfortunately I did not have a name of license plate number to report them. Understand, the cost of disposal was more than what these guys got paid to do the job, this I know for fact.

How will he handle Hazardous Material (HazMat)?

Paint, electronics, tires, and Freon bearing items require special treatment, just to mention a few. As the owner you may not be aware of these requirements. Now what?

Several times I have personally been called to haul away Hazardous Material. We can’t and won’t do it. We know the requirements and the law. Once the person understands that he can’t legally dispose of, the options are limited. How many TVs or mattresses have you seen on the side of a rode? One is too many!!

We understand the temptation people have in this DIY world we live in. My answer remains the same, let the professionals do their job. In the end you aren’t saving any money, nor any time.

Make No Mistake, It Is Illegal!!

Recently the AC Trash Hauling & More team was called out to clean up the dumpster area of a retail complex that was a victim of illegal dumping. This was the third time we visited this site in three years.

It takes a lot of balls to leave this stuff behind an unlit retail facility!!!

What follows is a very good definition of "Illegal Dumping".

Illegal dumping refers to the unauthorized disposal of waste in areas that are not designated for such purposes, such as public parks, roadsides, or other private or public properties. This can include hazardous materials, construction debris, or other types of waste.

How many times have you driven down a street and seen a mattress, an old TV, brush, or old furniture, or some other trash and/or junk? We see it too often!!

Illegal dumping is harmful to the environment and can pose serious health risks to people and wildlife. It can lead to pollution of soil, water, and air, and can also create breeding grounds for disease-carrying organisms.

The AC Trash Hauling Crew recently had a friendly debate about recycling and the burning of trash.

The bottom line question, is the burning of trash considered recycling?

It was a lively discussion with a variety of view points.

Alas, we went to our fiends at Google to learn the following information. The answer still leaves the answer to our question as definite MAYBE.

It's important to note that recycling guidelines can vary by location, so it's always best to check with your local recycling program to see what items they accept for recycling.

It's also important to know that not all items are recycled for free. Some locations charge for items to be recycled. A great example is with tires and motor oil. It is not uncommon to have an "Environmental Fee" included in your bill when you buy tires or have your oil changed. Another typical fee is for the reclamation of freon or other forms of refrigerants from refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners. Once again you are urged to consult your local recycling program.

What is the difference between a DUMP, a TRANSFER STATION, and a LANDFILL?

Did you even know there was a difference?

Many of our customers do not know that there is a difference between these items.

A dump is an informal site where waste is deposited without any proper planning or management. Dumps can pose serious environmental hazards, including groundwater contamination, air pollution, and the spread of disease. As a child I remember going to the local dump to get rid of our trash and "Garbage".

A transfer station is a facility where waste is temporarily stored before it is transported to a landfill or recycling center. Transfer stations are used to consolidate waste from various collection points, which can help reduce transportation costs and emissions. The AC Trash Hauling team uses a variety of transfer stations to get rid of the "junk" and "trash" that we haul away.

A landfill is a designated area where waste is disposed of in a carefully engineered and managed manner. Modern landfills are designed to minimize environmental impacts, such as odor and groundwater contamination, and are typically lined with impermeable materials to prevent leakage of waste into the surrounding environment. Landfills can also capture and utilize gases generated by the decomposition of organic materials to generate electricity or heat.

We Accept MOST Challenges

I recently left a networking meeting, H7, and a fellow member asked me what our typical day was like. She asked with a touch of trepidation thinking that we are mired in an indescribable pile of filth.

How wrong she was!!! Yeah we see some filth and grime, some of which is indescribable filth. That is the exception to the rule.

Everybody has junk and trash. They just don’t like to hear those words. Trust me, for 15 years I have searched for a better name, a more sensitive name, a more politically correct one. I have failed to find a better descriptor.

Let’s start with the understanding that NOBODY thinks that their STUFF is trash or junk. There is always some form of emotional attachment to it. There is a price tag associated with the STUFF, some value. Someone may be able to use or repurpose an item. Some charity or non-profit may be able to help a person in need.

Back to the original statement. The filth, the hoarder, the unhealthy environment is the minority of the work we do. AC Trash Hauling & More is much more basic and simple!!

Everybody has Unwanted Treasures. You know, the college books, the moving boxes that have remained unopened from three moves ago. The sentimental items that your kids don’t want. People also have the obsolete computer/electronic device, the old sofa or mattress squirreled away in the corner of your basement. How many of you have the carpet remnants left behind by the previous owner?

We could share a multitude of stories about all of these items! This is what we typically haul away.

Let us debunk another myth or misconception. Our typical job is about the size of a pickup truck load. We have hauled away a bale of straw used as a yard decoration for Halloween. Then again, we have hauled away 200 CY of trash and junk from a hoarder house.

Wow. People Recycle Bars of Soap!!

Did you know that there are companies that recycle the bars of soap from hotels? Don’t be ashamed to admit that you did not know that. AC Trash Hauling is on a long list of people that did not know that.

Storage Wars

Really!!!

Storage units are as plentiful as banks and gas stations, one on every corner. Have you ever wondered what is held hostage inside those four walls? There was, maybe still is a “Reality” TV Show called “Storage Wars” that gave a glimpse inside. It is up to you to decide the truth behind that show.

AC Trash Hauling & More has cleaned out many storage units. Some of them have been for the user, others for the facility owner. We never found the “Pot of Gold” at the end of the rainbow.

What follows are a few tales from our version of the Storage Wars.

12 Years of Storage

One individual had a full unit that he had not opened in over 12 years. He loaded it up and then moved out of state.
Let’s start with some basic math. Let’s assume that he paid an average of $200 per month rent for 12 years. That equals, $28,800 in rent, undoubtedly underestimated. The storage company was pleased!! The tenant, maybe not. Listen to the money being flushed down the toilet.

We show up to help empty the unit. Father and son are debating what can be thrown away and what can be recycled and/or donated. Very admiral of the two.

During the conversation, I discover that there is a “Brand New” washer and dryer that had been used maybe a dozen times in the unit. Mind you that is a little used 12 year old “Like New” item.

The only thing we have to say is WOW!!

Storage Consolidation

Another customer wanted to consolidate 2 units. A cost saving measure.

We arrive and find a “modular” mother-in-law apartment in pieces on the floor. This was a display of a unit that one could erect in the garage for the “Mother-In-Law” to live in. Prefab walls, floors, cabinets, etc. The problem it was old, moldy and unusable. Probably sat there for 5 years. We got it cleaned out for a respectable fee.

Unpaid Move Outs

Oh my. the stench, the junk, the useless stuff. Appreciate the fact that before a Storage Unit Operator can “Foreclose” on the unit, the clock is ticking for unpaid rent. Ultimately an auction is held for the contents, no one buys. Now the Storage Unit Operator owns the collection of TRASH, lost and rent, and payment for disposal.

For the most part my moves were Corporate Moves, paid for by my employer. Give me a loud AMEN. Regardless there is a great amount of planning required, coordination and yes STRESS!

Good is NOT Good Enough

As you were leaving a restaurant you were asked, “How was the service?” How many times did you respond, “It was good.”?

What about service at the car dealership, the grocery store, the hair salon?

Is “Good” a good answer? Does it truly express dissatisfaction? At a bare minimum as a consumer, you should expect “Very Good”. Good is not good enough!!!

We often get asked to haul away and dispose of paint on our house clean out projects. This is often a large challenge. One that we face with caution.

Allow us to share a few quick facts about the volume of paint that is “wasted” and disposed of annually.

With a bit of research we discovered that over 75 million gallons of paint are disposed of annually. Let us help you appreciate what this looks likes.
A typical Olympic size swimming pool holds approximately 660,000 gallons of water. That’s huge. That said, 75million gallons will fill 113 plus swimming pools, (75,000,000/660,000.)

It’s difficult to wrap your arms around that much paint!!

So, what can you do to help legally dispose of unwanted/unused paint?

What is Junk?

What is junk?

This is a tough question to answer. It touches the nerve center or sensitivities of people.

I would venture to guess that we all know what junk is when we see it. The problem is “when we see it”. The age old adage, “One man’s junk, is another man’s treasure” holds true in this story.

I cannot think of a single soul that would appreciate you calling their possessions “junk”. Often times there is an emotional attachment to an object that is deemed valuable. Others still see something as useful, thus it can’t be junk. While others can’t part with something because it was a gift. Perhaps you are saving something for your kids, only to learn that they don’t want it. Maybe you think you will use it again, SOMEDAY!!

We have heard all of these comments and then some.

Some things we have hauled away include:

The Monkey

Oh The Things We See

It is a common question, what is the strangest thing we have seen?

Just today I was reminded of a unique story. In my journey to a different customer, I rode past a house full of memories.

The home owner called, laden with anxiety. Apparently their insurance company called and requested that a bunch of “STUFF” be hauled offsite immediately, or they would terminate their home owner’s insurance coverage. This was undoubtedly a scary moment for my new customer.

The details of what we hauled away are a distant memory. I do know that we saved the customer from a difficult situation.

The customer asked me into the house to check something out. The interior of the home was in as much disrepair as the exterior. Carpets were dirty and thread bare. Dirty laundry was stacked in the nearby bathtub. There was a bunch of children’s toys on the dirty floor. I prayed that there was not an infant in the home crawling around on this floor.

As I walked through the house towards the exit, I spotted a cage near the fireplace. It was then that I realized who or what the toys were for. In the cage was a pet monkey!!!

Several years have passed since that encounter. Through the magic of social media, I was reconnected with the customer. Since then they have moved away, the house has changed hands and has undergone extensive renovations.

As for the monkey, he has passed away.

How Do You Measure Your Networking Effectiveness?

Let’s not beat around the bush, we have a desire (need) to measure everything. What was my ROI on the latest ad? How many cold-calls must I make to get a positive response? 3 out of 4 dentists approve of a specific toothpaste! Look at baseball and the “cyber-metrics” that have invaded America’s game! Oh, exactly how big was that fish?

That said, why not measure the effectiveness of your Networking activities? So, what do we measure? How do we measure it? When do we measure it?

For me, before I can even think about pulling out the yard stick, the down-maker, the calculator, I need to define my purpose and my expectations. After all the metrics we take and analyze have to be made against a baseline.

Let me back the bus up. By education, I am an Engineer; a numbers guy. I believe that in order to succeed you need to know mathematically what the goals and expectations are. Establish the goals and measure away!! Measure actual against theoretical.

Sounds pretty straight forward. Ah, this works if and only if you ignore the human element, emotions, and personalities. It works in a “lab” or controlled environment.

Play with me for a few minutes. Your goal is to connect to as many Realtors as possible. You assume that they have access to the people that you “NEED” to grow your business. What are the Realtors looking for? They are looking to expand their customer base. Good guess! Do your expectations align with theirs?

Play further…Throughout the year, you encounter 4 people seeking the services of a Realtor. Ahhh, on your electronic Rolodex, your CRM, you have connections to 125 Realtors. Who is the lucky one to get your referral? On the other hand, your Realtor “Networking” partners have access to a total 1,250 clients, each of these is a potential customer for you. Wow you have 4 leads, they have 1,250 leads; 10 leads each. The balance scales are way out of balance!! Now what?

I think the answer is easy. It is made even easier when you and your Networking Partner(s) discuss expectations up front, day one. Lay those expectations out on the table early. Review them often, share progress regularly.

Food for thought. You may be a valuable asset to your networking partner. You may be the “GO TO” guy to help his client solve a problem. By solving a problem, your networking partner becomes a hero (small h,) to their client. You provided value to that relationship. Now how do measure your effectiveness? How do measure your value? How does your networking partner measure your value?

The AC Trash Hauling & More Team obviously wants to grow our client base. We also want to grow our relationships with our Networking Partners. This creates a win-win-win for all involved.

So, we return to the initial question, “How Do You Measure Your Networking Effectiveness?”

People Helping People One At A Time

Call it what you want, Random Acts of Kindness, Paying It Forward, Good Deeds, The Good Samaritan, or whatever. AC Trash Hauling & More wants to acknowledge and celebrate people that are helping others. With that in mind we have established a monthly “Helping Hands Award”.

There are many service organizations that are dedicated to a specific cause. They are the large groups that sponsor pancake breakfasts, food drives, clothing drives etc. They are the ones with committees to plan major events. Indeed they do serve our communities. We are not looking for the big budget events. We are looking for the individuals that help people one at a time.

Here is how it works. By the 25 ^th of each month, we are asking you to send us your nomination. Tell us about that special person, what they did, the impact it had. It doesn’t have to be a long story, just a very sincere story. Our staff and/or other invited guests will read the stories and make a decision for the monthly winner.

What does the winner get? We have decided to make a $50 donation to a charity selected by the winner. What no big award to the winner? That’s right!! People that give do so because it is in their heart. They don’t do it for adoration or a pat on the back or great recognition. Thus we want to keep it simple. How Do I get Rid of The Pile?

Welcome home!

I remember fun and excitement of moving into a new home. The excitement of the new surroundings, the plans for redecorating, the challenge of organization. These are probably the same emotions you are currently feeling.

There are boxes full of STUFF in every room. Slowly they get emptied, the contents placed on shelves and in closets. In doing so, the floor is littered with wrapping paper and partially empty boxes. The reality starts to set in. You have a mountain of debris, boxes and papers to get rid of. Slowly they make their way to the garage. Quickly the garage fills up with these boxes.

Furniture Removal

If It Came Into The House, We Can Take It Out

Dresser and Night Stand We Donated

Over the years we have learned some important lessons about furniture removal and disposal. Each project has some unique challenges. Each piece of furniture also have their challenges. Our experienced team understands how to efficiently and safely remove furniture from your home.

Sofa Beds and Sleeper Sofas

These bad boys can be a great challenge, especially to ones tucked away in the basement or on the second floor. They are heavy, cumbersome, and a challenge to navigate corners, doorways, and stairs. Since 2008, we have had our challenges. We have also learned many techniques to make the job easier.

Bunk Beds

Typically, when our customer asks us to remove and haul away a bunk bed, it includes disassembly. It’s not a big challenge. It just takes a few tools and some patience to remove a few screws and bolts. The biggest challenge is to remove it without causing any damage to the walls in the bedroom.

Recliner Chairs and Sofas

Over time we have learned some tips that make the removal easier and safer. One of the greatest challenges is to make certain that the recliner will not unexpectedly open. Our team will secure the recliner to make certain that there are no sudden surprises.

Bookcases

They appear to be big and cumbersome. We want to remind you that many, not all, came in a box and you had to assemble them. That said, our team will quickly disassemble them and carry it out in pieces. By the way, this reduces the volume of trash and junk that we haul away.

Other Items

Our team has removed so much more than these few items. We have removed and hauled away tables and chairs, china cabinets, entertaiment centers, coffe tables, end tables, dressers, night stands, desks, dressers, and much much more. How can we help you?

Donations

Our team will donate as many pieces of furniture as possible. A few things must be considered with donations.

Most locations such as Goodwill and Salvation Army, are hesitant to accept items that have pet hairs and pet odors. Furthermore, they are becoming more and more conscious about wear and tear on the items. This makes donations more difficult. That said, we work with other organizations and churches that are willing to accept items that are gently used.

Believe it or not, some “dated” pieces are no longer accepted are donation centers. A good example are the “Old” entertainment centers. They do not house flat screen TVs, thus are no longer wanted or desired in their resale stores.

Dangerous Too!

What kid doesn’t like to bounce on a trampoline? I haven’t met that kid yet!! Just look at the smiles on their faces and the laughter and squeals coming out of their mouths. Ah the exuberance of youth.

Mom and Dad, take some time and think through the process of adding a trampoline to your backyard playground. There is more to consider than what size to buy. We found the attached website from a major insurance company that highlights some great points.

On the surface, technology and junk removal sound like strange bedfellows. The junk removal process seems simple; call someone, they pick it up, the customer pays the bill, and then it junk and debris is thrown away. Ah, if life was so simple.

Several years ago AC Trash Hauling & More added a CRM, customer relationship management, to our arsenal of tools to reach out and communicate with our customers. It was the best thing we ever did. We have become accessible to our customer base 24/7/365.

Our system, THRYV, allows communication 24/7/365 between us and our customer. It all starts with visiting our website, www.ACTrashHauling.com . Our customers, you, fill out a simple form with a request for service. You can also add photos and suggested schedule dates.

From there we can provide an estimate or contact you for additional information. Step next is to approve the estimate and schedule.

Our automated system will send you a reminder the day before and approximately 1 hour before the scheduled pick up. No reason to miss the appointment.

Before we leave your property, we will send you an electronic invoice for credit card payments. Follow the instructions and pay the bill. This automatically issues a receipt. The other option is to pay us directly, and once again an automated receipt will follow. Neat, clean and simple.

We recently added the ability to be reached by voice activated systems; Alexa, Google Assistant, and Bixby as a few examples. Sit at home and ask these “assistants” a question such as, “Who can haul away and old mattress from my home in Westfield, IN?” This will result in an answer to contact us.

Trading Dollars For Time

How many times have you looked at a quote and thought to yourself that you could do the job for less than the quoted price? Be honest, you say it frequently.

We face this daily at AC Trash Hauling & More.

Our challenge to you.. Can you really do it for less than our quote? Will you do the job? When will you get it done?

What you are being faced with is “Opportunity Cost”.

You may be able to complete the task, the job that we are willing to do. Our goal is to help our clients in 48 to 72 hours from the time they book the job. Where are you going to carve out the hours with your busy work and family schedule to complete the job within 72 hours?

We recently fielded a request to clean out two properties, in neighboring towns. The Property Manager informed us that he typically rents a dumpster and loads it himself. For these two, he said it’s too cold, negative numbers in the morning. Furthermore he was too busy.

He looked at our quote and responded that he could rent a dumpster for the same price we quoted. Ah, our price was all inclusive, we would load our trailer, haul it away and pay dump fees. Per his own admission, he only had a fee for the dumpster. I guess the trash/junk was going to magically jump into the dumpster.

We promised a completion on Monday. He had no confirmed delivery day or time for the dumpster. Whose price is truly the most cost effective?

Opportunity cost. We would complete the project before he even got started. He would be able to show and potentially lease the properties 24 hours after we started. Doing it himself, he has no completion date.

What's In A Name?

When AC Trash Hauling & More was started in June of 2008, it simply carried the name of AC Trash Hauling. That’s what we did, who we thought we were. It was a simple name for a simple business. We hauled trash, junk, debris, unwanted treasures, and STUFF.

Our beginnings on June 30, 2008 were humble, simple, and straight forward. Our goal was to simply help people, anybody, get rid of their trash, junk, and STUFF. It couldn’t be any simpler than that!!

Oh how wrong we were!!!

It wasn’t overnight, it slowly happened. Potential customers started to call. Apparently there was a need to get rid of trampolines, swing sets, mini-barns. Can or will we remove carpet from a vacant rental property? Will we remove obsolete office furniture? Do we have the ability to remove tree limbs and branches as a result of a storm? The requests grew.

Slowly customers willing to “DYI” (Do It Yourself) started asking us if we could provide dumpsters and/or trailers so they could save money and do the manual labor. We found a solution to meet their needs.

As time went by, we adopted the name, AC Trash Hauling & More. Our intent was to meet the desires of our customers or potential customers, while remaining true to our beginnings. We haul trash!!

With a tag line of, “We Haul ALMOST Everything” we always ask our clients, “What Challenge Do You Have For US?”e your own from a different source.

Did you think that it may be you?

In our quest for customers, we attend a variety of business networking meetings. Our objective is to share our services, our business practices, and to help others grow their businesses. This list is neither exhaustive nor in any particular order.

A typical question that faces all networkers is “Who is your ideal customer?”? Another common question is “Who are you looking for this week?” The objective is to be as specific as possible.

This my friends is a great challenge. A question that I find difficult to answer in a form that creates the Ah Ha moment with the audience. One that says, I have just the person or business for you.

Allow me a little time and space to explain our challenge,

Our trash hauling and junk removal services are beneficial to, dare I say, everybody. We all have too much stuff, too much clutter, too many things. Now some soul searching, are you willing to admit that that is a true statement?

OK, let’s ATTEMPT to refine the answer.

We frequently field the question, “Can you haul away a mattress?” The answer is an immediate yes.

Many people are misinformed about mattresses and the ability to either donate or dispose of them. Let us clear the air, at least from our perspective.

Donations

Most donation centers such at Salvation Army, Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, will not accept mattress. They have some very legitimate reasons for their actions. Used mattresses can and do carry with them certain health risks, the most prominent is Bed Bugs. However we should not forget the presence of other bacteria that accumulates regardless. The extent of which is always subject to debate. Covid 19 has placed greater concerns on the reuse of mattresses. No one wants to be responsible for spreading this virus.

Covid 19 has placed greater concerns on the reuse of mattresses. No one wants to be responsible for spreading this virus.

Recycling

There are facilities throughout the United States that recycle mattresses. Locations with a high volume of traffic are good relocation sites. Think about the volume of people that visit the numerous sites associated with Disney and other resorts. They are more likely to recycle mattresses than the hotel along the interstate in the Mid-West. That said, there are no viable recycle centers in our service area, Metro-Indianapolis.

Landfills

Unfortunately the most used location for old mattresses is at the local landfill. Mattresses present a challenge as they are big, bulky, and take up a lot of space in the locate landfill. They also create a challenge at any “Trash Burning” facility as the springs internal to the mattresses can cause problems with the automated systems used to transfer the debris to the furnaces and the ashes back out.

Illegal Dumping

Sadly, too many people opt to dispose of their mattresses under the cloak of darkness in a dark, alley, behind a dumpster, or in the local corn field. This my friends is a despicable solution!!!

Burning

Believe it or not, some people, will collect mattresses and burn them. Their intent is to burn away the padding etc. and salvage the springs and metal pieces. These are obviously not legitimate businesses.

Everybody Has Unwanted Treasures

I just left a networking meeting, H7 , and a fellow member asked me what our typical day was like. She asked with a touch of trepidation thinking that we are mired in an indescribable pile of filth.

How wrong she was!!! Yeah we see some filth and grime and indescribable filth. That is the exception, not the rule.

Everybody has junk and trash. They just don’t like to hear those words. Trust me, for 14 years I have searched for a better name, a more sensitive name. I have failed to find a better descriptor.

Back to the original statement. The filth, the hoarder, the unhealthy environment is the minority of the work we do. AC Trash Hauling & More is much more basic and simple!!

Everybody has Unwanted Treasures. You know, the college books, the moving boxes that have remained unopened from three moves ago. The sentimental items that your kids don’t want. Admit it, somewhere your mother has stashed away every report card, every newspaper article, and every participation trophy you received. The truth, you don’t want them.

People also have the obsolete computer/electronic device, the old sofa or mattress squirreled away in the corner of your basement. How many of you have the carpet remnants left behind by the previous owner?

The Road To The Landfill

I bet you never stopped to consider the effect of gas prices on the unglamorous task of picking up and disposing trash and junk.

Welcome to the snowball effect of the cost of fuel!!!

The attached video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJOD6aDBdAE ) only scratches the surface about the transportation and movement of trash and junk. Trash hauling and removal, while labor intensive, is subject to a more volatile mark, the cost of fuel.

Most people and communities subscribe to the NIMBY factor about trash disposal and landfills. What is, NIMBY? It stands for, Not In My Back Yard. Understandably, no one wants a dump (landfill) in their backyard or community. Easily understood. Now the challenge, how does the trash you generate make the journey to the dump/landfill? One word answer, TRUCKS.

Question next, once at the dump, how does it get treated? Simply answer, heavy equipment consisting or trucks, bull dozers, excavators, and other heavy equipment move the trash. Ah, once again this large scale Tonka Toys require fuel.

So let’s track the journey of a piece of trash. AC Trash Hauling picks up a load in your garage. It gets loaded onto our truck, then driven 15 to twenty miles to a transfer station. This is a temporary holding spot for trash. Here it gets sorted, consolidated, and loaded onto another truck. That truck journeys down the highway to a facility, Landfill, which will use heavy equipment to spread and cover with a layer of “dirt”. This action is repeated hourly and daily!! Once again the extensive need for gas and fuel.

Bottom line, not heavy on manpower, but definitely heavy on fuel consumption. A few pennies at the fuel pump gets multiplied by the number of steps it takes to put a piece of trash in the landfill.

Oh baby, a few cents at the gas pump grows rapidly in the trash disposal story.

Trying to Land New Business It’s a Lot Like Fishing

Fish Where The Fish Are

I was at a recent networking meeting in which the group was discussing prospecting methods to use, especially when business is slow, when the pipeline seems empty. The answers were as diverse as the businesses and the personalities of the people participating. Regardless of the specifics, everyone was trying to catch fish. Some were looking for Moby Dick, others for “Jaws”, and others for a little nibble on the bait.

Have you ever watched the TV series, “The Deadliest Catch”? The storyline is about crab fishermen in Alaska attempting to catch their season quota. The show follows several crews as they put out to sea. Each ship heads off to the fishing grounds with experience as their best guide. There are no promises that what was successful last season will be successful this season. These hi-tech ships are laden with GPS, sonar, and whatever technological advancement is available. Regardless, they drop their traps into the deep laden with bait and hope and pray that they were successful. Sometimes they win, others, they lose.

This is a lot like networking. There is no clear division between success and failure. Success comes by continued effort. It comes by changing tactics and strategies. It comes by changing your location. It comes with patience and perseverance. It comes with ACTION. It also comes with EXPERIENCE.

I want to look at a few of the suggestions my colleagues in the room suggested as actions they take to fill their pipeline.

Social Media

A few people said that they increase their outreach via Social Media. They then listed increased activity on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Their objective was to blindly reach out to people in their current sphere of influence and network. It is founded on the hope that people they “know” or are connected to see the message concurrent with a need.

Direct Mail

Some suggested a direct mail campaign, either snail mail or electronic. The purpose is to place your name in front of as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. Once again, hoping to find the “Honey Hole”, the place where fish are biting. This is somewhat in line with the fishermen on “The Deadliest Catch”. History and experience suggest that this is a good place to fish, usually. It comes with no guarantees. How often do the nets come up empty? How do you measure success?

Research

This was suggested as a means to refine the contact list. With this approach, the person is not seeking the masses, but only looking for the Great White Shark, JAWS. It sounded as if the business would seek as much information about demographics, needs, perspective customers/clients/businesses. When “sufficient” data was collected and analyzed, some form of contact would be made. This is a slow and arduous process with an extremely specific target. This approach suggests that the business is fishing for Moby Dick, the big fish. It may not fill the void in the immediate pipeline, yet can ultimately yield great results. It is an obvious question to ask, “Do you have the ability to wait for the big fish?”

Previous Customers

Touching base with previous customers makes a lot of sense. There are great systems available to simplify this action. There are untold numbers of CRMs, Customer Relationship Management systems that help organize and establish consistent routines to “Touch” your past clients. A very positive aspect of this is the ability to touch the masses quickly.

Networking Events

Formal or at least organized events allow businesses to be in front of others. It’s an opportunity for face to face interaction with others. A downside is that the success of these events is limited to the number of people/businesses you can meet at any particular event. Additionally, these events become the first step in a lengthy process of developing a relationship. Instantaneous results should never be expected. Alas, it takes us back to the challenge, how do you fill the pipeline?

The Cop Out

Each approach has its pros and cons. Each method can and will yield results. There is no “Right” or “Wrong” solution. The ultimate challenge rests in the question, “How long will it take?”.

It all takes me back to fishing.

· What kind of bait are using?

· Are you fishing in the right pond?

· Are you using the right tool to catch the fish? Are you using a hook to catch one fish at a time, or a net to catch a large quantity all at once?

· How many fish do you have to throw back because they don’t meet the requirements?

· How patient are you?

· How adaptable are you to change my tactics?

· When is the right time to change tactics?

If you are looking for the definitive answer from me, you are fishing in the wrong location or using the wrong bait.

Exactly What is Junk?

Unwanted Treasures

How would you define Junk? Trash?

This is a difficult question to answer. One full of emotion. One full of variables. One full of “What If’s.”

The bottom line is that people, you and I, don’t want to think of the items we have squirreled away in some box, tucked away in the bowels of a storage space in the basement as junk or trash. That box is full of memories, good intentions, and useful stuff. However ask your kids, if they want their report card from the first grade they’d be willing to have you placed in a mental institution. Not to mention how they would react if you offered to give them that framed paint by numbers light house.

For others, that old ash tray can still be used, even though no one in your family smokes. The musty volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica was once a wealth of knowledge and information has been replaced by a Google search. No one wants those 20 year old AAA road maps and atlases that fill a box.

These are a few examples of the kind of STUFF people save, not willing to throw away. This however is a good example of the junk and trash that we find every day at a customer’s house. Sure there are many memories attached to these things. The truth of the matter is that these memories have been tied up inside of a box tucked into the far corner of your basement, left unnoticed or unopen for years.

The AC Trash Hauling Team often refers to this items as “Unwanted Treasures”. Good once, memory filled, but now just clutter and junk, AKA “Unwanted Treasures”.

Should I Rent a Dumpster, Buy a “Bagster”, or Hire a Trash/Junk Company

Consider These Facts

Faced with the dilemma, rent a dumpster, buy a “Bagster”, or have someone haul the junk away? What is the best answer?

There is no simple answer to that question. There are several things that must be considered before you make a decision.

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of each service. Let’s look for some answers to questions that you must ask yourself.

Dumpsters

Cost

Typically you pay a flat rate for the dumpster. This simply means that regardless of how much you put into the dumpster, ¼ full or full, you pay the same price. Dumpster companies however will place an upper limit on the weight of material allowed in the dumpster. Exceed the limit and you will be subjected to a surcharge.

Dumpster providers also set a maximum number of days that you may keep the dumpster. Exceed the days and a surcharge for additional rent will be added.

Labor

Sometimes people overlook the cost associated with filling the dumpster. Remember that YOU will do all of the work to fill the dumpster. How valuable is your time? What are you worth for an hour?

Illegal dumping

It is amazing how people find dumpsters and load them up a night. This happens frequently in remote locations and in big cities. The dumpster company doesn’t care who filled it, it’s your responsibility.

Bagster

If you are unfamiliar with them, they are a tarp like box that can be loaded and then hauled away by one of the national waste management companies. The Bagster is approximately 8’ x 4’ x 2’, the size of the bed of a pick-up truck, (a little more than 1cy).

Cost

You purchase the Bagster from one of the Big Box stores (Lowes, Home Depot etc.). The cost is about $40.

There is also a disposal fee for the bag and contents. The price is a variable based upon your location. The cheapest I have heard was $100.

Schedule

It is our understanding that the company states that the Bagster will be picked up within 3 business days of the request. Understand, that an order placed on Friday may not get picked up until Wednesday.

Labor

You provide all of the labor to fill the bag. Once again, how valuable is your time?

Illegal Dumping

Because the bag must be set next to the road, anyone can get into it during the night and day. Thus, there may be illegal dumping. There may also be some unexpected visitors to the unit, rodents and pranksters.

Hauling Service

Cost

Junk/Trash companies typically charge a fee based upon the volume of trash/junk you are getting rid of. My general rule of thumb says that if I were to load my truck/trailer more than two times for a project, a dumpster is more beneficial.

Schedule

Hauling companies come when needed. Obviously subject to their workload. At AC Trash Hauling, our goal is to provide service within 72 hours of being called.

Labor

The hauling service will provide all of the labor. Your biggest job is to get organized before they arrive. On the day of service, sit back and relax. They will do all of the work.

Which method is better? There is no simple answer to that question. Schedule, volume, space all play into the answer.
