Spring Cleaning

Ok, it’s March 1st.  The weather is doing some funky things in Indiana, other places too. In two weeks the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano, and the Buzzards to Hinckley, OH.  Spring training has already started in Florida and Arizona.  All sure signs that it is spring!! What is your spring ritual? Is it that time that you clean out the garage, the storage unit, or the mini-barn?  Do you adhere to the time honored tradition of spring cleaning? WE service a lot of customers this time of year.  We haul away the patio furniture that didn’t survive the winter.  We haul away these pesky tree limbs that found their way to your lawn.  Time to start up the old grill and discover that it won’t make it through the new season.  We will haul that away too. Let us help you this spring as you liberate yourself from some of these old...

Mattress Disposal

What can you do with an old mattress? Not much!!! Very few resale shops and donation centers will accept mattresses.  There is an obvious health concern; bed bugs and other pathogens, associated with used mattress. Most weekly trash services will not accept them for curbside pickup.  They just don’t fit into the trash bins very well.  Some services will pick them up at the curb for an additional fee. What other options exist? Illegally Dump Sadly, some people illegally dump them on the side of a back road, on a construction site, or in someone else’s dumpster. None of these practices are recommended and could be very costly when you are caught.  Furthermore, the disposal issue isn’t solved.  It is just a game of pass the buck and let someone else solve the problem.   Burn Another practice that is not recommended.  There are people/companies that will haul them away and do this.  They ultimately take the springs to a scrap yard and claim to “RECYCLE” the mattress. This method is laden with valid reasons why it is not a good consideration, and potentially illegal. Recycle There are some businesses that truly recycle the mattresses and box springs.  In order to be successful, they are in the need of large quantities of mattresses.  Furthermore, the customer pays a fee for recycling. To fill their needs, these companies tend to be located in resort areas in which hotels, hospitals, and universities tend to replace mattresses with greater frequency than a typical homeowner. Right about now you should be asking, “How do you recycle a mattress?” The process is quite simple...

Electronic Recycling….. It’s The Law In Indiana

The title says it all.  In Indiana the law requires you to recycle electronics. The sad reality is that there are many people that for whatever reason is, do not follow the law. How many of you have driven down a back road and saw a TV thrown into the ditch? It is common to see electronics beside dumpster enclosures at apartment complexes, commercial property, or even at construction sites.  All of these examples are illegal on several fronts. The questions remains, “How do I get rid of electronics?” Community Disposal Sites Some communities have “HazMat” collection sites.  They collect and recycle electronics and other “Hazardous Materials”. They are open to the residents of that community and are often times “FREE”, meaning it’s included in your taxes.  Some may charge a small fee for their services.  The challenge with this option is that not all residents may be able to transport their items to the site. Community Electronic Recycling Days Some communities/organizations host a recycling event.  Often times there is a small fee associated with these evets. A great option, however two problems exist.  Is one scheduled when you have a need to get rid of some electronics? And, do you have the ability to get your electronics to the event. These 2 options have a third challenge, you have to all of the work, and you must remove the item from the house, deliver it to a drop off location, and unload it.  Not everyone has the ability nor the resources to do this. AC Trash Hauling offers a 3rd option.  We will pick up the items at...

Why Would You Buy A Junk Removal Franchise?

Why would you ever consider buying a junk removal franchise? In 2008 when I started AC Trash Hauling, I was approached by an individual that sold franchises. Obviously he approached me about buying a franchise. I didn’t even look at the information and flatly rejected the opportunity. Nine years later as I revisit the franchise model, I ask myself, “Why would you ever consider buying a junk removal franchise?” My answer to this question is “I have no good reason to ever consider owning or operating a franchise!!” Allow me to share my story. AC Trash Hauling was started with $85 and a pickup truck. My primary goal was to pay my bills during the 2008 economic disaster. I’ll allow you to call it by any name you prefer. I was booted to the curb after a 30 year career in Construction and Construction Management. When the economy went sour, the construction industry was devastated. I am not certain about its current state of health. Furthermore, I am not interested in all of the details associated with its health either. I hope it is healthy and getting healthier as it is a good indication of how our economy is faring. I digressed a tad. I recently pulled some financial information about a trash/junk hauling franchise. A few key numbers in the overview were: • Start-up Expenses $86,950.00 Including: o Franchise Fee $40,000.00 o Initial Marketing $5,000.00 o Truck Deposit $12,500.00 o Working Capital $20,000.00 That my friends is a chunk of change just to get started. Wait there is more!! The franchisee also has ongoing expenses to be paid...

Exactly What Is Junk or Trash

We say that we are the trash hauling and junk removal business.  It sounds simple and straightforward doesn’t it?  For some unknown reason it is more complicated than it looks. Exactly what is trash or junk?  This my friends is the proverbial $1M question. Like many of you I quickly went to the old standby, the dictionary to get a definition of “Junk”, and this is what I learned.                       “Old or discarded articles that are considered useless or of little value” Seems straightforward, but I have a little bit of a problem with this definition. First of all it defines Junk as “OLD”.  Is old truly a requirement for JUNK? Second, it also refers the items as “DISCARDED”.  This clearly states that it has already been thrown away. Third, it described as something of “Little Value”.  According to who?  The old adage, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” immediately comes to mind. Let’s rethink the definition of JUNK a little bit and add a few new ideas to the definition. You Haven’t Used It In A Year This could include clothes, a piece of furniture nestled in the back of the garage, old toys or play equipment, a treadmill, your old dusty and musty college textbooks.  By now you should be getting the picture clearly. You Recently Bought A New or Updated One What did you do with the obsolete TV or computer?  Is it tucked away in the basement?  How about the new counter top appliances like to coffee maker or toaster?  Maybe it’s a lawnmower...

Customer Satisfaction is Our Key to Success

The process sounds simple.  Answer the phone, send a crew to the address, load the truck and haul the trash and junk away to the landfill.  Rinse and repeat.  No doubt, that is the simple side of the trash hauling and junk removal business. The AC Trash Hauling team does more than the simple task.  Here are a few examples of how we react to the needs of our customers. Ed and Moving Boxes Ed had recently moved into a gated community.  He and his wife spent the day unpacking boxes and organizing their new home.  Their objective was to get unpacked and have the moving boxes ready for pick up with the next day’s trash service.  The pile of boxes and stuff grew at the end of their driveway.  The trash service approached the alley and did not enter.  The trash was partially blocking the road.  What Ed did not know was that their trash exceeded the weekly limits for a pick up.  Furthermore, the truck did not pick up their neighbors trash Ed had used the services of AC Trash Hauling previously and was confident that they would solve the problem.  It was late in the afternoon, the local transfer station   was closed.  That did not stop the AC Team.  They quickly loaded the mountainous pile of cardboard boxes and hauled it off to a local recycling center.  On the second trip, they loaded up the trash, including the neighbors that was left behind.  Crisis avoided, Ed and his wife were good neighbors.  The AC Trash Hauling team was able to solve a potential problem outside the bounds of the...
The debate is out there.  Cities are passing laws to increase wages, our federal government is talking about it.  It’s real.  Does it stop with minimum wage earners? The attached link is to an article/blog written about 1 year ago.  Read it, comment on it, share it with friends.  I am curious what you think....

Boot Strapping…. A Fundamental Building Block for AC Trash Hauling & More

Boot Strapping doesn’t sound like a sophisticated business model.  It’s not.  It is a common sense approach to business.  It’s a mindset.  It’s discipline. Boot Strapping is the art of starting and running a business with little cash and no debt.  In today’s economy, not the most vibrant economy ever, it is a philosophy that can’t be ignored.  In a more robust economy, it is a process that should not be ignored.  Boot Strapping always has its place in business. The key to Boot Strapping is to exercise restraint and discipline.  Every decision made must show immediate cost benefit for you and your company.  You must make a conscious decision before you spend money, you must avoid the knee jerk reaction in hopes that it will have a positive result. While there is no litmus test for all conditions and situations, a list of questions can be easily generated to test the desire to spend.  Consider asking yourself some of the following: Do we need this, or is it actually a want? Do we have other options to get the same result? Do we have the money to pay for this? How does this fit in with our overall strategic plan for the company? Is there an adverse affect if we were to delay the purchase or action? Embedded in the answer to these and similar questions is a cost effective answer that protects your cash flow while yielding positive results. Consider the process and decision making associated with setting up an office for your business.   It may be beneficial to consider the following questions: Do I need a...

We Haul ALMOST Everything

This is a true story, in fact I just ran into the individual that was in need our our hauling services. We practice what we preach. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. At a recent networking event I was telling people that we have undergone a slight name change this year. We added “AND MORE” to the AC Trash Hauling name. The explanation was simple. Our customers have always asked us to do some unique and interesting jobs. We have long said that we like challenges and phone calls that begin, “I don’t know if you can do this but..” We received not one but two calls with a very similar request. Apparently these two individuals were summoned to the local court house. Following a brief meeting with officials these folks left the court with a “Driving Citation”. The citation is definitely not one to be framed and placed in your office. My phone rings and the conversation goes something like this. “Andy, your company tagline says that you haul “ALMOST” everything. I have a challenge in front of me. I know that your schedule has some flexibility, especially early in the morning. Well, I made a bad mistake and well, well… do you think you could haul my sorry butt to work? I just got notified that my license has been suspended.” The challenge was laid before us. We wanted to practice truth in advertising. The negotiations began. When we say we haul ALMOST everything, we mean it. Yes, our customers have surely asked us to complete some unique projects. Perhaps this story belongs in teh category of...

More than Hauling Trash

I was looking at some old blogs and this one brought back memories.  I am in the trash hauling business, yet I do much more than haul trash.  This is my story about a family in need and how we were able to help.     I sensed some anxiety in his voice.  On the surface it was a simple job, yet there appeared to be something more just below the surface.  The extent of the job was always in flux.  It took about a month of on and off communication.  Finally, I invited myself to the home to help evaluate the situation, make some suggestions, and hopefully leave with a job and a check. Arriving, I met Andy and his wife Kathleen.  They had the task to empty the house of its contents for the former resident who had recently passed away.  The little house was full of possessions and the garage heavy with stuff.  There was no room to separate treasures from trash.  I suggested that we clean an area out in the garage with the expectation of creating a staging area.  As we worked it became obvious that here were nostalgic reactions towards some of the things.  It seemed that behind every item there was a story. As we worked, we chatted.  As we chatted details were slowly revealed.  My initial reaction was correct; there was a much deeper story than emptying the house of a departed friend.  There was a greater burden on the hearts and mind of Andy and Kathleen as they sorted through the memories.  As we worked and chatted I learned that...

An Artist, an Illustrator, Philanthropist, and Bon Vivant

I posted this blog several years ago. The trash hauling business is very interesting.  I get to meet a lot of people with some very interesting resumes.  I hope you enjoy this encounter.   A few months ago I met an interesting individual.  This morning I saw an article in the Noblesville Daily Times and the Noblesville Star about this man. Our introduction came via the internet, followed by a phone call, and ultimately in person.  Ken has hired me to remove a large yet defunct television from his basement. As I entered the basement, I found myself in a large multi-purpose room that was a combination of TV room, home office, library, and art studio/gallery.  Paintings were hanging on the walls and leaning up against the walls in no particular fashion or order. As I commented on some of the artwork, I was given a brief tour of some of the work.  Soon the computer was switched on and with a few clicks of the mouse I was given a private showing of his computer generated art.  I saw a variety of colors and shapes was even given a demonstration on how the works were created.  A few clicks later and I was being shown a collection of illustrations for a soon to be released children’s book, “Three Sister Dragons”. After a few minutes the mouse was put into action to reveal another set of drawings.  This time I was looking at the progress drawings for what ultimately became the seal for the Environmental Protection Agency.  I was also treated to the story of symbolism of the seal...

AC Trash Hauling & More in the Community

Henry Ford once said, “A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business.” AC Trash Hauling & More is not all about making money.  Yes, we do charge for our services.  Of course we have a goal to turn a profit at the end of the year.  That however doesn’t make us all about money. We are proud of our business accomplishments from our humble beginnings in 2008 to having served more than 2500 customers in less than 7 years of business.  During the preceding seven years we have touched and have been touched by individuals, ministries, charities and organizations that serve our community, our home. People Some of the people we have encountered include: Tiara, a wife and mother of 2 small children.  It was Tiara’s dream to raise her children in a nice home.  She and her husband made a major financial decision and leased a house.  The money was extremely tight.  In order to pay their monthly lease, they sold the vast majority of their furniture. Their family situation was brought to our attention.  Within in days, we were able to find some much needed furniture. Jimmy, is retires and faced with the tremendous burden, financial and emotional, of caring for his ailing wife.  The family is negotiating the uncharted waters of Alzheimer’s.   We helped Jimmy move some furniture out of his home.  More than that, we provided an outlet for Jimmy to share some of his concerns.  While we worked, Jimmy shared stories of his life in Chicago and happy memories of the many years he spent with his lovely bride.   Ministries and Charities Through...

Fun Trash Facts

Trash Facts The average American throws away 4.5 pounds of trash a day. To give you an idea of how much trash we generate here in the United States, imagine digging a pit the size of a football field, including the end zones. If we bury all of the trash we produce in just one year, that pit would be 100 miles deep! Every year we fill enough garbage trucks to form a line that would stretch from the earth, halfway to the moon. Each day the United States throws away enough trash to fill 63,000 garbage trucks. Almost 1/3 of the waste generated in America is packaging. In 1986, the United States generated almost 160 million tons of paper, glass, metals, plastics, rubber, food, and yard waste. This was an increase of 80% over the figures in 1960. In 1996 13.3 million tons of waste was generated in Indiana including 1.9 tons from out of state. In 1995 27% of the United States’ food supply spoiled or went unused (48,000,000 tons). Man-made rubbish in orbit includes 8,500 objects and 100,000 pieces of space litter. 74,200 fans at Super Bowl XXX generated 75 tons of trash in Sun Devil Stadium in Phoenix, while 72,000 fans at Super Bowl XXXI generated 68 tons at the Superdome in New Orleans. At Super Bowl XXXII in Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, 70 tons of trash was generated by 68,000 fan   About the Author: Andy Corman is the Owner of AC Trash Hauling & More a Metro-Indianapolis trash hauling and junk removal company (www.ACTrashhauling.com).  He is a structural engineer by education with 30 years...

Proper Disposal of Paint

Did you know that according to the Unites States Environmental Protection Agency, Americans throw out about 64 million, yes million, gallons of paint every year?    What does 64 million gallons look like?  The United States Department of the Interior calculated that this equals 128 Olympic size swimming pools.  That folks, is a lot of paint. So the next question must be, “Where does all of this paint go?” The reality of the situation is, it is the consumers’ responsibility to safely use leftovers or properly dispose of the products. OK, then what options do we have? 1) Donate it Find an organization that has a need for paint.  This could be a local theatre group that uses it in set design.  A family that could paint an accent wall in their house.  Use your imagination, someone may have a need. 2) Use it yourself Add a 2nd or 3rd coat of paint to whatever it is you are painting.  Is there another project in your house that could use a coat of paint? 3) Recycle it Many communities have collection sites that will take your paint. 4) Dispose of it properly This should lead you top the question, “How do I do that?”   It is important to understand that not all paints are created equal, thus there is no one answer to this dilemma.  Shy of finding opportunities to use all of the paint, the best solution is to take it to a recycle center.  None available you say.  Then disposal options must be investigated.   Oil Base Paints Oil based paints should be taken to a...

30 CY of Memories

The AC Trash Hauling team was called upon to evaluate what resources were required to haul away the junk and unwanted treasures from a home and the adjacent horse barn.  Upon arrival we were met by Stu, the family patriarch, and three of his children.  It was obvious that while Stu was in charge of the day, the work was being done at the request of his children.  In his eighties, Stu understood the need to do some housekeeping. Armed with a series of lists, we passed through the basement heavy with remnants of his past.  There were old sofas and chairs, dressers, several microwave ovens, old doors, and much nondescript stuff.  With the aid of his list, numerous items were identified for disposal. We moved to the second floor and a collection of old mattresses, TVs, and other collections of things.  Depending upon his lists, we again were given a series of items scheduled for removal.  We could not detect any logic to the items he selected. The tour continued to the horse barn.  Stu explained that he built it many years ago, but considered it one of his follies.  The goal for the day was to empty it.  The contents included old wood, several roto-tillers and lawn mowers, and a rusted out refrigerator and range from a bygone era. In truth, we were not asked to throw away any junk, we were asked to help remove memories of 40 plus years in this humble abode. While the AC Trash Hauling Team was busy emptying the barn, Stu and his grown children were busy emptying the house of...
